Route 1896

The road to Wingate starts here at Route 1896! This event is mandatory for all students and can help take care of the business of college so you can focus on all the new and exciting adventures that await you at Wingate. Staff will be on hand to help you park and find the Route 1896 event in Cuddy Arena. Once inside, you will check in and be issued a passport with information on the next steps. The critical offices you must clear in order to receive your residence-hall keys and keep from jeopardizing your class schedule will be Student Accounts (Business Office), Financial Planning, and the Health Center. You can check your status by using your Wingate credentials to log in to myGate.

Students and families can also find information and representatives from our IT department, Student Government Association, Greek Life, Pawprint (printing and mail service), and Campus Safety (parking decals and information). This event will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, for all new students.

Residential Student Move-in

Welcome to your new home! Move-in day at Wingate is an exciting and energetic day full of new beginnings and Bulldog pride.

You will begin your day by visiting our Route 1896 event in Cuddy Arena. All new students are required to attend this event (please see the Route 1896 section for more information). Residential keys will be available upon completion of the required items.

To help with traffic flow, we have assigned students to arrive on campus in three shifts by last name:

Last Name

Time Shift

A - G 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
H - O 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
P - Z 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Look here for the full Orientation schedule.

Once you receive your keys, it’s time to move in! Staff will be on hand to direct you and your family to your residence halls and appropriate unloading areas. There will be plenty of hands to help you unload your vehicle and get you moved into your room. For any last-minute items, a short drive to Monroe provides plenty of shopping and dining options. Students are expected to be back in their residence hall by 7 p.m. to participate in meetings with their Resident Assistants.

For more information about room sizes and residence halls, please review the housing section of this website or view this video.

For any questions about residential move-in, please contact the Office of Residence Life and Involvement at reslife@wingate.edu or call (704)233-8245.

You will receive a map along with your room key to help direct you and your family through specific routes to residence-hall unloading areas. One person must remain with the vehicle at all times. Once the vehicle is unloaded, directions to parking lots will be provided. We will offer a shuttle service from the parking lots back to the heart of campus.

Commuter Students

Our commuting students are a vital part of the Wingate family. We have designed a specific commuter check-in process to aid in your transition to Wingate. Check-in for commuters will begin at 2 p.m. in Cuddy Arena with the Route 1896 event and will conclude at 4 p.m. Check-in and Route 1896 are mandatory for all commuters before they start class (please see the Route 1896 section for more information). Commuting students will need to visit the Commuter Table for more information about Orientation. Starting at 5 p.m., all commuter students are required to attend our commuter-student meeting in Austin Auditorium, where we will introduce some vital resources and information to help with the adjustment to Wingate. Afterward, you will be treated to dinner in the dining hall before joining our residential students at Bulldog Kickoff at 8 p.m.

As a reminder, New Student Orientation is required for all new students, including commuters and transfers. During the weekend, students will attend their first college classes, and attendance will be taken. It is important to attend so you are kept up to date on class material and experience all that Wingate has to offer during Orientation.

New-Student Orientation

Wingate University holds New-Student Orientation the weekend before classes begin. New-Student Orientation will begin on Thursday, August 17, at 8 p.m. with our always exciting Bulldog Kickoff! Orientation will last until Sunday, August 20, once Convocation has concluded. Students will spend the weekend getting to know fellow Bulldogs and their Orientation Leader (OL) and gaining helpful information about life at Wingate.

This video will introduce families to a small group of the Orientation team members!

OLs are upperclass student leaders at Wingate who will help you navigate your first couple of days on campus. As a part of Orientation, you will participate in activities that will help you to get to know the campus community, Wingate traditions and academic expectations, and you will even have your first college class! In order to get your Wingate experience off on the right foot, all Orientation activities are mandatory for all new students, both commuter and residential.

Family members are invited to join us for the Parent Welcome at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. in Austin Auditorium. During this time, families will hear from President Rhett Brown, our SGA President, a recent graduate, and Wingate parents who have been there before. We want families to take advantage of this opportunity and allow us to welcome you into the Wingate family. Both sessions will be similar in format and optional, so please select the one that best fits your schedule. Evening and weekend Orientation activities are limited to students only. The Office of Alumni Relations and Parents invites all families to take a break and enjoy an Ice Cream Social in front of the Stegall building from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Parent Society and how families can become active in our Bulldog community.

We know that families and students are eager to start their Wingate journey, and our Orientation team looks forward to welcoming our new Bulldogs on August 17. Here is a short video from us, officially welcoming the Class of 2021.

Welcome Week 2017

Welcome Week is an extension of Orientation and is designed to help students make new friends, immerse themselves in campus life, become more comfortable with Wingate, and start Majoring in a Great Life! It’s a week for students to enjoy campus-life events, speakers, entertainers, and academic and social activities. Welcome Week begins after Orientation and lasts through Saturday, August 26. From Street Fair to free food, there is really something for everyone, every day!
